TILLMAN FAMILY

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS, I'M SURE THERE ARE MANY MISTAKES! IF YOU FIND ONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  FOLLOW ALL INFORMATION UP WITH YOUR OWN SOURCE RECORDS!

James Tillman was born in 1776  I believe in South Carolina.  He died in Pascagoula, Mississippi in 1860.  James first appears on a land deed for "Red Creek Swamp" in Mississipi in 1819. Although I can find NO proof that James is the father of the following children it is assumed by many genealogists, the children match the ages, number and sex of records for early census.

It is also believed that two other family members accompanied James to Mississippi, one is Gideon who married Mary Ann D Bounds, and Elizabeth who married John Mallet.  Elizabeth would have been to young to have been a sister, so it is assumed that she was a niece.  No age has been found on Gideon as shortly after his marriage he undoubtly moved on to greener pastures.

In Stephen Tillman's book "Spes Agri"  I believe he makes a mistake.  I believe Joseph R and his wife to be James' parents, and the younger siblings attributed to Joseph and his wife are, I believe, to be James'. As Joseph is still alive, I see no reason for these children to be with James in Pascagoula.

This group of Tillman's where ever they came from have contributed greatly to the development of the Alabama/Mississippi Gulfcoast.  Few families from this area can disclaim kinship to this VERY large family. Mobile, Pascagoula, Gulfport, Biloxi and many other communities in this area have many ties with the Tillman Family

The children of James Tillman were:

Joseph Tillman was born in 1810 in Georgia.  He married Martha Ellen
      Copeland
, (sister to the notorious  outlaw James  Copeland, leader of the
      Copeland Gang)
.  Joseph died in 1872.

Abby Jane Tillman was born in 1814 in Georgia.  She married Benjamin
      Parker
.

John Tillman was born in 1815 in Georgia.  John died after 1866 when he
signed an Amnesty Oath for the United States and before 1872, when his wife
remarries.  John's tombstone in Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery  has
been reerected and therefore can  not be depended upon for the death date
which states 1875. John married Elishaba before 1839.  Elishaba's name is
given on her youngest daughter's death certificate as being Berry and on her
      eldest son's as being Benyall.

James A Tillman was born in 1817.  He married Elizabeth Berry.  He died
      in 1860.
