John L Johnston (1804? -1843)

Little is really known of John L. Johnston. He was the second or third of 5 children of Daniel Johnston and Elizabeth Linder. His father died in 1816 when he was about 12 years old. His mother then married her brother-in-law, James Johnston. It said he was well educated and had some training as a doctor.

From the court documents we know that John and his siblings received nothing from their father estate nor did they receive anything from the estate of their grandparents.

On the 20th of May 1824, John L. married Eliza McGee in Mobile Alabama. It is this lady who maybe the source of our Indian blood. They stayed in Alabama until about 1830, when they moved to Mississippi. There their next five children were born. John L brought his family on to Texas in 1841. He first bought land on the Brazos where he ran a ferry. They moved further on to the plains around Wallis. It was there that John L. died in the fall of 1843. Eliza Johnston was a hard working woman. She bought land from the Allen family and raised her family. Her sons became good, hard working farmers and ranchers. Census records indicate that they preferred to be called "stockraisers".

In July of 1859 in Austin Co. TX, Eliza married Isaac Duncan. Isaac was the father of Fanny J. Duncan who married John C. Tubb in 1869. John C. was a half brother of Leon Ernest Tubbs. He was a butcher in Wallis for many years.

In 1880, Eliza was living with her daughter, Penelope Johnston Allen in Austin Co. She was listed as a widow. She died in 1885 in Coryell County at the home of one of her sons.

William E. Johnston (1833-1884)

William E. Johnston was the fifth child of John L. Johnston and Eliza McGee. He was born in Mississippi and came to Texas with his parents when he was about 7 years old. His father died in 1843, leaving a widow with 9 children. William, from an early age, must have worked hard as the Johnston family prospered. Eliza had bought land from M. L. H. Harry and the Allen family, both early settlers of the area and both our ancestors.

On 31st of January 1853, William married Elizabeth Allen, daughter of Miles Allen & Mary Dobson. Miles Allen had died several months before Elizabeth was born. Her mother remarried Samuel Evetts in January 1839. Their daughter Susan Evetts married Lemuel Linder Johnston, William's older brother. Their daughter, Mariah Evetts married James W. Johnston, William's younger brother. William's sister, Penelope married James William Allen, Elizabeth Allen's brother.

I have not confirmed William's service in the confederacy but feel sure he served his time in the confederate army. His daughter, Frances was born in 1857. Their next child, Maria Jane was born in 1864.

After William & Elizabeth married they lived next to her mother, Mary Dobson Allen Evetts in Coryell Co. It was in Coryell county that Elizabeth died shortly after the birth of their daughter Lisa in 1878.

By 1880, William had returned to Austin County. It was there in January of 1880, he married Elizabeth G. SLAUGHTER Stanfield, daughter of Mary Ann COLE Slaughter Bullock. Elizabeth was the widow of Marion Stanfield. Her uncles, James & Austin Cole were married to William's sisters, Margaret & Harriet. Elizabeth had a daughter by her first marriage named Frances J (Fanny) Stanfield who married Thomas Berry Tubbs, brother of Leon Ernest in 1894. Her sister Julia Anne Bullock married Hugh G. Horn, 1/2 brother of Leon Ernest.

William & Elizabeth had one son named William Franklin Johnston in 1883. William died 28th of January 1884. Probate papers on his estate only mentioned his wife Elizabeth and his 15 month old son William Franklin.

In December 1887, Elizabeth married Damascus (Mack) Horn, half brother of Leon Ernest Tubbs. They were the parents of 4 children.
